A lot of stuff is said in jest!
A lot of stuff is said in jest! — I guess I’ve heard this line in a song by Eminem, which I don’t seem to recall. Nevermind. If you’re reading this, I hope you don’t get bore or doze off to this write-up. Today I’ll talk about that one quality that I believe most of us wish to have. Maybe it’s not just one quality — a set of skills probably. Well, it’s the art to outdo everyone in a group when it comes to telling something that keeps the fellows engaged. It’s the art of narrating stories, cracking jokes, or coming up with some irrelevant stuff that the whole crew would laugh their heads off to — or at least feel that they are a part of the conversation. But to this, one may argue, “Not everyone wishes to be that guy who makes sure that every member of the group feels ‘included’, huh!” Well, that’s right, but someone or the other has to take responsibility under the premises of some moral obligation or — wait! I guess I’m giving unnecessary bricks to this Conversation Complex! He used to do the same. His volubility allowed him to add some stupid details to even some serious topics, which on a closer look weren’t as stupid as perceived in the first listen. So what did he possess that assisted him to hold the strings with a firm grip? To chatter and entertain his peers was his idiosyncrasy; perhaps that helped. I learnt one thing from him that you can offer a lot to your listeners if you’re humorous. Tell harsh truths and disguise them as jokes — with layers and layers so that unveiling becomes a weary task. And indeed, a lot of stuff is said in jest! He wasn’t good at cracking jokes; he was good at telling selective stuff. He had mastered the art of what to tell and what not to tell. Grave talks give nothing but worries, so it’s better to let it flow in jest. And, of course, the self-deprecating jokes would beat any hot gossip. Let me give an example. Getting a backlog in a subject is some serious thing, but engineers laugh it off like failing a subject is as obvious as getting one’s proposal denied by his/her crush. The reader may argue that this example doesn’t explain the aforementioned idea that well, but it doesn’t have to — as the notion is not to make too much sense; turn everything into a joke. And since you’ve read this so far, check this song out on YouTube — Can’t Handle This by Bo Burnham. When I listened to this song, I thought: why would he recommend such a foolish song. After multiple listens, I realised that it was a masterpiece. Why rack your brain to bring forth some futile explanations to your fears or problems when you can simply scoff it off. Hope I didn’t make too much sense.
